From a name Bouter (equivalent to boud (brave) + heer (army); cognate with Old English Bealdhere, Old High German Baldheri or Baldhere and rendered in Medieval Latin as Baltharius, Baltherius) with the patronymic suffix -se. Compare Boutersem.
