Earliest attestation from a 1985 song by the Antwerp band De Strangers, named "Borgeri-Borgerhout-Borgerocco".
The right-wing Antwerp satirical magazine 't Pallieterke started using the term in 1988 or earlier; it was for a while mainly used in a derogatory way, most notably by the Vlaams Blok, to indicate alienation.
Now self-appropriated by the locals of Moroccan descent in a humorous way.
