Invented in 1933 by American physicist Francis Bitter.

Bitter electromagnet (plural Bitter electromagnets)

  1. A strong electromagnet constructed from circular conducting metal plates (Bitter plates) and insulating spacers stacked in a helical configuration, rather than coils of wire.
