Etymology

[edit]

First attested as bolgaerd in 1440. Potentially derived from a compound of Old Frisian *Bullinga (a surname) and werd (terp, artificial mound used for habitation). A reading of the first element as bol (rounded elevated place) is less likely. Compare Wijtgaard.
