Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested as bekesteren and bekistere in the middle of the 12th century. Etymology uncertain. Derivations from Proto-Germanic *bika-sterja- (“tapered foothill”), *beke-sterja- (“ridge located next to a brook”) and Middle Dutch *bekesetere (“brook dwellers' settlement”) have all been proposed. Compare Bikschote.
