Etymology

[edit]

First attested as bekesteren and bekistere in the middle of the 12th century. Etymology uncertain. Derivations from Proto-Germanic *bika-sterja- (tapered foothill), *beke-sterja- (ridge located next to a brook) and Middle Dutch *bekesetere (brook dwellers' settlement) have all been proposed. Compare Bikschote.
