Etymology

• (Overijssel) First attested as prioris Montis sancti Nycolai in dauantria in 1290. Compound of berg (“hill, elevated place”) and kwartier (“quarter, neighbourhood”). Named after a sand dune which was the site of a church dedicated to Saint Nicholas.
• (Utrecht) Compound of berg (“hill, elevated place”) and kwartier (“quarter, neighbourhood”). The neighbourhood was named after a nearby hill, the Amersfoortse Berg.
