[edit]Borrowed from Norwegian Bellsund, itself a reborrowing from Bell Sound, named by Jonas Poole because of a local bell-shaped mountain (now known as Klokkefjellet).
According to Soviet sources, named after a big ancient bell raised by a Pomor merchant Ivan Starostin (or his ancestors), although this bell was located in Starostin Cape area far away from Bellsund many years after Poole’s expedition.
