[edit]From Middle High German bīht, begiht, from Old High German bigiht, bijiht, from bi- + jiht (“statement, confession”), from Proto-Germanic *jihtiz, equivalent to bei- + Gicht. Cognate with Luxembourgish Beicht, Dutch biecht.
