[edit]Deverbal from baatschen, from late Middle High German patschen, *batschen (“to smack, slap”), of onomatopoeic origin (compare German patschen). Possibly reinforced by or conflated with German Peitsche (“whip”), from eastern Middle High German peitsche, from Old Czech bīč.
