[edit]From Norwegian Børselv, from the informal noun børse (“long gun, rifle”) (see Swedish bössa) + elv (“river”), a calque of the Finnish/Kven name, Pyssyjoki, from pyssy + joki. In Northern Sami the name is Bissojohka.
