Etymology

Probably from bíldr (“edged weapon, bloodletting knife”), thus meaning "The Edged Weapon". Ultimately from Proto-Germanic *bīþla- (“axe”), instrumental noun from *bītaną (“to bite”). ^[1]

However, compare *bilją (“blade, axe”), which could have influenced its development.
