Sindarin

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

This word is not attested in Tolkien’s writings, but is fan-created ‘Neo-Sindarin’; some authors prefer to hypothesize different formations meaning ‘sheep’ such as maf, maw, or baw. The word is formed as if descended from a Primitive Elvish *mbambā, a reduplicated form of *mbā (‘sheep’); only the latter term is actually attested by Tolkien. In any case, ultimately onomatopoeic; compare English baa. Quenya máma (sheep) is related, described as a descendant of the extended form *māmā of *mbā.

Noun

[edit]

bam • wt# (plural baim)

  1. (Neo-Sindarin) sheep
