Appendix:Northern Sami given names
A preliminary list of Northern Sami given names
[edit]Since the sixteenth century Sami persons have been officially registered with Swedish, Norwegian or (since the nineteenth century) Finnish given names. Sami forms of such names were used among Sami speakers. A few original Sami names were used as nicknames of Christian names, for example Juoksa for Josef. Sami names also survived in place names and family names.
Sami spellings of given names were first listed in the 1980s. The list below is based on a list in a Northern Sami dictionary and a Finnish name day calendar. It may contain archaic names, name suggestions, and name forms in other Sami languages.
The explanations after the dash are mainly cognates or renderings in Finnish (fi/), Swedish (sv/) and Norwegian (no/). When the source of the explanation is not mentioned, it comes from the name list in the dictionary. (SA) means the article by Samuli Aikio. Explanations preceded by an asterisk (*) are speculations based on the other names on the calendar day and/or modern Northern Sami words.
