From *qātal-. Due to the Canaanite vowel shift the /aː/ shifted to /oː/, and the /a/ of the second syllable became long as a result of being next to the stressed syllable.

קוֹטָל (kotálm (plural indefinite קוֹטָלִים or קְטוֹלוֹת, singular construct קוֹטַל־, plural construct קוֹטְלֵי־ or קְטוֹלוֹת־)

Used for forming substantives.
