Etymology

From *qatāl-. Due to the Canaanite vowel shift the /aː/ shifted to /oː/, and the /a/ of the first syllable became long as a result of being open and adjacent to the stressed syllable.

קָטוֹל (katólm (plural indefinite קְטוֹלִים, singular construct קְטוֹל־)

Used for forming:

  1. Intransitive adjectives.
    גָּדוֹל (great) קָדוֹשׁ (holy)
  2. Infinitive absolute.
  3. Abstract substantives.
    כָּבוֹד (honor) שָׁלוֹם (peace)
  4. Active substantives and adjectives.
    עָשׁוֹק (oppressor) בָּחוֹן (assayer (of metals))
