Etymology

[edit]

Gikun word derived by applying Chinese-derived spelling 第七日 (seventh day), which decomposes into (ordinal number marker) + (seven) + (day), to native Japanese word なぬかめ (nanukame, the seventh day), which decomposes to なぬか (nanuka, seven(th) day(s)) + (me, ordinal suffix).

Noun

[edit]

第七日 (なぬかめ)[1] (nanukame) → 七日 (なぬか) ()(nanukame)

  1. the seventh day
※This word, pronounced なぬかめ (nanukame) in Genesis 2, would ordinarily have been written 七日 (なぬか) ()(nanukame). The translators probably decided to use a special spelling for this word because of its special significance to God who later commanded that the seventh day be observed as a Holy Day by His people.
