Etymology
[edit]Gikun word derived by applying Chinese-derived spelling 眼瞼 (“eyelids”), a term which decomposes into 眼 (“eye, sight”) + 瞼 (“eyelids”), to native Japanese term まなぶた (manabuta, “eyelid”) which decomposes to ま (ma) an ancient combining form of modern reading め (me) + な (na) an old variant of possessive particle の (no) + ふた (futa, “lid”). The futa changes to buta as an instance of rendaku (連濁)..
Noun
[edit]眼瞼[1] (まなぶた, manabuta) → 瞼 (manabuta) archaic form of 瞼, 目蓋 (mabuta)
