Etymology

Originated as early as the Indus Valley Civilization in 2100 BCE.

Production

1. Join both hands with palms facing inwards toward each other.
2. Bend down slightly and say "namaste".
3. Revert to normal state.

Interjection

[namaste]

1. (South Asia, Southeast Asia) namaste!; hello!

Usage notes

In North India and Nepal, one can also say "namaskar" for formality. In Bangladesh and parts of South Asia, "pranam" is also used.
