[edit]First attested as damsweer in 1447. Compound of an unclear first element and Old Frisian weer (“artificial mound used for habitation”). The first element may be Old Frisian Amze (a personal name) or Middle Dutch ambt (“legal district”), referring here to the Oldambt.
