Swedish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]- (Norrbotten) First attested as Aarde(r)wik in 1486. Compound of årder (“ard, plough”) + vik (“inlet”).
- (Dalarna) First attested as Aluik in 1539. It's earlier form was possibly Old Swedish *Almovik, which would be a compound of *Alma (“Almoån, a local stream”) + vik (“inlet”). *Alma is likely related to dialectal Swedish alma sig (“to grow”), referring to how the stream would often 'grow' outside its banks.
- (Stockholm) First attested as Ahlwijken in 1720. Compound of al (“alder (tree)”) + vik (“inlet”).
