Etymology

[edit]
  • (Norrbotten) First attested as Aarde(r)wik in 1486. Compound of årder (ard, plough) + vik (inlet).
  • (Dalarna) First attested as Aluik in 1539. It's earlier form was possibly Old Swedish *Almovik, which would be a compound of *Alma (Almoån, a local stream) + vik (inlet). *Alma is likely related to dialectal Swedish alma sig (to grow), referring to how the stream would often 'grow' outside its banks.
  • (Stockholm) First attested as Ahlwijken in 1720. Compound of al (alder (tree)) + vik (inlet).
