Latin

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Of uncertain origin, but traditionally said to be founded by the Pelasgians. Possibly from Ancient Greek ἅλς (háls, salt, sea), but the Pelasgian language should have retained the initial s in its source (Proto-Indo-European *séh₂ls). Also compare the Venetan river name Alsa, which could be related.

Proper noun

[edit]

Alsium n sg (genitive Alsiī or Alsī); second declension

  1. An ancient city in Etruria, in modern Italy

Declension

[edit]

Second-declension noun (neuter), with locative, singular only.

1Found in older Latin (until the Augustan Age).
