Uncertain, probably Germanic: al-, from Proto-Germanic *allaz (all), and -ōd-, from Proto-Germanic *audaz (wealth)[1] or ali-, from Proto-Germanic *aljaz (other), and -ōd-, from Proto-Germanic *audaz (wealth).[2] Cognates include French Élodie and Alodie.
