Etymology

The form suggests a Bavarian influence (cf. German Taube vs Bavarian Daum (dove)). From Middle High German alben, the oblique form of albe, from Old High German alba. Doublet of Alp. Compare Bavarian Alm, Alemannic German Alp, Alpe.
