[edit]From Northern Sami Áile (formerly also spelled Aili) first recorded in Lapland in the 17th century, also in the diminutive form Ailitza; possibly an equivalent of English Helga or Alice, or of Norwegian Eili. Taken up by Finnish speakers at the end of the 19th century.
