Etymology
[edit]Ancient Greek ἄγονος m (ágonos, “infertile, barren, sterile”) + Ancient Greek πτέρῠξ f (ptérŭx, “wing (of a bird)”), literally “barren-wing”. The nonstandard spelling of the -pterix suffix (usually -pteryx) suggests Latin or English influence in the taxonomic spelling.
