[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From a- (no) +‎ cyto- (cell) +‎ -ota (having).

Proper noun

[edit]

Acytota

  1. The taxonomic superdomain of all non-cellular life.
  2. The taxonomic domain of viruses and viroids.

Usage notes

[edit]

When the definition of life includes non-cellular and cellular lifeforms, this is one of the two main divisions, the other being Cytota.

When treated as a domain, its compatriot domains of life are usually divided into three, the taxonomic domains, the prokaryotes (bacteria or eubacteria; Prokaryota), the eukaryotes (Eukarya / Eukaryota), and the Archaea (archebacteria).
