[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested as ekthorp in 1215-1226. Potentially a compound of Middle Dutch eggh (“corner, boundary”) and dorp (“farmstead, village, secondary settlement”). The first element is unlikely to be a personal name or dialectal aagt (“low-lying pasture”). Compare Bregtdorp.
