Etymology

[edit]

From "9" and "3", the number of the department (93)

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /nœf.tʁwa/
  • Audio:(file)

Noun

[edit]

9-3 m (uncountable)

  1. (colloquial, derogatory) the department of Seine-Saint-Denis

Note

[edit]

This is the only case of a French department's number whose ciphers are spelled separately. The spelling as a whole is also common (quatre-vingt-treize) – as it is the case of any other department – and is not derogatory.
