(This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “Obviously this has something to do with the face, but what?”)
This one-handed ASL sign is produced usually with a pleasant smile, often with eyes closed by the end of the sign:
Posture the dominant hand in the “5” handshape near the dominant cheek, dominant palm facing back.
Move the hand in a circle around the entire face (up the dominant side, across, down, and back to the dominant side), ending with a closing of the fingers into the following posture.
Posture the dominant hand in the “open A” handshape near the dominant jaw, dominant palm facing back.
Hold the final posture briefly.
The sign may be produced quickly to mention beauty in passing or it may be produced slowly for emphasis.
Optionally shake the hand in the final posture for emphasis.
