-ová f (noun-forming suffix)

  1. feminine of -ový; added to nouns to form adjectives meaning “having the quality of” (similar to -y), or “pertaining to”
    jahoda + ‎-ová → ‎jahodová (jahodová zmrzlina (strawberry ice cream))
    chrám + ‎-ová → ‎chrámová (chrámová loď (nave of a temple))
  2. feminization suffix used to form a female surname from the corresponding male surname (used for wives and daughters)
    The name of Mr. Novák’s wife is Nováková, the name of their daughter is also Nováková.

Usage notes

This suffix is also added to foreign female's surnames, except Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese names, e.g. Jane Doeová in case of English.
