[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Germanic *-ndz. Cognate with Dutch -end, English -ing, German -end, Latin -Δns, Ancient Greek -ΟΞ½ (-Εn), Sanskrit -ΰ€ ΰ€¨ΰ₯ΰ€€ΰ₯ (-ant).
Suffix
[edit]- -ing. Forms present participles from verbs.
- -er. Forms agent nouns from verbs. Identical in form and meaning, but not in declension, to the present participle.
Usage notes
[edit]- In both cases, the suffix is always attached to the thematic vowel of the verb; thus, this suffix always manifests either as -π°π½π³π (-ands) and -ππ½π³π (-Εnds). These are used when the infinitive ends in -π°π½ (-an) and -ππ½ (-Εn) respectively.
- Sometimes, apparent participles are attested which do not seem to have been formed via an extant verb but rather through the direct combination of various words plus this suffix into an adjective which resembles a participle in form and meaning; e.g. π±π»ππΈπ°ππΉπ½π½π°π½π³π (blΕΓΎarinnands), πΏπ½πππ°πΈπΎπ°π½π³π (unfraΓΎjands).
