[edit]Inherited from Sauraseni Apabhramsa -इयै (-iyai, indicative third-person present passive), from Sanskrit -यते (-yate), where the medial -y- is a genuine reflex of the Sanskrit -y-, possibly borrowed or reinserted at an earlier point. Compare the rarer Hindi -इयो (-iyo), from Sauraseni Apabhramsa -इयौ (-iyau, imperative third-person present passive), and also Hindi -ईजिये (-ījiye), also from Sanskrit -यते (-yate) but where the -y- has undergone -(i)y- > -ijj- > -īj-.[1]
