Solombala English

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Origin uncertain. Likely from Germanic infinitive suffix *-aną (< PIE: *-onom) than Slavic instrumental *-omъ. Changing from /n/ to /m/ in pidgin spellings seems a dissimilation. Cognate with Russenorsk -om, -um.

Suffix

[edit]

-омъ (-om)

  1. An ending added to almost every verb in any verb tense.
English buy + ‎-омъ (-om) → ‎баёмъ (bajom, to buy)
English drink + ‎-омъ (-om) → ‎дринкомъ (drinkom, to drink)
    Russian смотрѣ́ть (smotrě́tʹ, to look) + ‎-омъ (-om) → ‎смотромъ (smotrom, to look)
(conditionally) English come + ‎-омъ (-om) → ‎комъ (kom, to come)
