Etymology

Contracted from earlier -мекші (-mekşı), from Proto-Turkic *-mekči. A cognate with Kyrgyz -мек (-mek), Uzbek -moqchi, Turkmen -mekçi.

Suffix

-мек (-mek)

  1. Used to form definite future tense.
  2. Used to form definite future participles from verbs.
    келу (kelu, to come) + ‎-мек (-mek) → ‎келмек (kelmek, which intends to come)

Usage notes

This suffix rarely occurs in the spoken Kazakh, and is mostly restricted to written texts.
