[edit]Etymology
[edit]Uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *-n̥kʷos, seen in Latin prop-inquus and Proto-Germanic *-ingaz. The d may come from a reanalysis of ποδαπός (podapós, “from what country?”), which would be from Proto-Indo-European *kʷod-n̥kʷós.
