From Latin -īna and its derived forms in other European languages, such as Danish -ine, present in many borrowed names and subsequently used independently to form new Icelandic names.

-ína f (noun-forming suffix, genitive singular -ínu, nominative plural -ínur)

  1. forms female given names, usually from male given names, e.g. Gíslína from Gísli, Sæmundína from Sæmundur, but sometimes from other names, e.g. Mýrdalína from Mýrdalur, a place name
  2. (humorous) forms nouns descriptive of women, e.g. óléttína (pregnant woman) from óléttur (pregnant)
