From Proto-Tai *C̬.qɤːŋᴮ (young hen) (Li, 1990; Bauer, 1996). Cognate with Thai เขื่อง (kʉ̀ʉang), Lao ເຂື່ອງ (khư̄ang), Zhuang hangh.
