[edit]Alternative forms
[edit]The central tine may not be even with the sides of the cup, or pass into the cup at all. When the tines are even, the symbol may be identical to common variants of ⟨♆⟩. Occasionally there will be no crossbar on the cross.
Etymology
[edit]A rotated ⟨Є⟩ shape for 'calx' with a cross at bottom for calx viva i.e. quicklime.
Symbol
[edit]🝁
- (alchemy, archaic) quicklime, calx viva
- (alchemy, archaic) any calx (the object of calcination, prototypically lime)
Usage notes
[edit]Used by Newton. In the works of Torbern Bergman, ca. 1775, may be followed with the symbol for a metal to indicate the calx of that metal, e.g. ⟨🝁♀⟩ calx of copper.
