Etymology
[edit]Possibly a Hittite borrowing: compare Hittite 𒅆𒄿𒌑𒍑 (ši-i-u2-uš /šīūš/, “god”), dative-locative singular 𒅆𒌑𒉌 (ši-u2-ni /šiuni/). Alternatively, connected with Hurrian 𒀭𒅆𒈪𒄀 (dši-mi-gi /Šimigi/, “the Hurrian Sun God”).
