From Sanskrit उच्च (ucca). Cognate with Hindi ऊँचा (ū̃cā), Punjabi ਉੱਚ (ucca) / اُچّ (ucc), Gujarati ઉંચું (uñcũ), Marathi उंच (uñca), Bengali উঁচু (ũcu), Dhivehi އުސް (us).
