From Proto-Turkic *tür(ü)k (see there for more). Cognate with Azerbaijani türk, Chuvash тӗрӗк (tĕrĕk), Turkish Türk, Uzbek turk, Bashkir төрөк (török), Yakut турок (turok). Compare also Hungarian török, an ancient Turkic borrowing.
