Inherited from Proto-Turkic *küntüŕ (daytime, morning; noon), equivalent to 𐰚𐰇𐰤 (kün, day; sun) +‎ 𐱅𐰔 (-tüz). Cognate with Chuvash кӑнтӑр (kănt̬ăr), Turkish gündüz (daytime, morning), Uzbek kunduz, Bashkir көндөҙ (köndöź), Yakut күнүс (künüs).
