Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *yinčü, itself borrowed from Middle Chinese 珍珠 (MC trin tsyu, “pearl, gem”). Cognate with Chuvash ӗнчӗ (ĕnč̬ĕ), Turkish inci (pearl), Uzbek inju, Bashkir ынйы (ınyı), Yakut чөмчүүк (cömcüük). Compare also Hungarian gyöngy, Russian же́мчуг (žémčug), Turkic borrowings.
