From Old Iranian *wáhišt-ah (compare Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬵𐬌𐬱𐬙𐬋-𐬀𐬢𐬵𐬎𐬱- (vahištō-aŋhuš-)), from Proto-Iranian *HwáhištHáhuš (literally best existence), a compound of *Hwáhištas (best, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hwásištʰas) +‎ *Háhuš (from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hásuš (life, existence, being)).
