[edit]From Proto-Iranian *jŕ̥dayam, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰŕ̥dayam, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱḗr. Cognate with Persian دل (del), Sanskrit हृदय (hṛ́daya), and English heart.
