From Proto-Iranian *čatwārHcát, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *čatwārHćát ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *kʷétwr̥dḱomt. Cognate with Sanskrit चत्वारिंशत् (catvāriṃśat), Persian چهل (čehel), Ancient Greek τεσσαράκοντα (tessarákonta) and Latin quadrāgintā.
