Inherited from Proto-Iranian *j(i)uā́na- ("life existence") from Proto-Indo-European *gʷeyh₃- (to live). Cognate with Persian جهان (jahân, world, universe), Avestan 𐬔𐬀𐬉𐬚𐬁- (gaēθā-, world; creature) and Northern Kurdish jîn (life).
