Etymology

According to Bailey from the Proto-Iranian preverb *aH- + *jánati (be born), which is from Proto-Indo-European *ǵenh₁-. Cognate with Avestan 𐬁𐬯𐬥𐬀 (āsna, noble), Khotanese [script needed] (āysña-, well-born, noble), the first component of Middle Persian [script needed] (ʾznʾwl /⁠āznāwar⁠/), as well as Old Armenian ազն (azn), Old Georgian აზნაჲ (aznay), აზნაური (aznauri), Iranian loanwords.
