From Proto-Indo-European *dyḗws (sky, heaven, sky god), in turn from *dyew- (sky, heaven). Cognate with Hittite 𒅆𒍑 (ši-us, god). Doublet of 𐤩𐤤𐤱𐤮 (lefs) and 𐤩𐤤𐤥𐤮 (lews)
