[edit]From 𐤒𐤓𐤕 (qrt, “city”) + 𐤇𐤃𐤔𐤕 (ḥdšt, “new”), in comparison to its mother city Tyre. Compare Aramaic ܩܲܪܬܵܐ ܚܕܲܬܵܐ (qartā ḥdattā, “new city”), Arabic قَرْيَة حَدِيثَة (qarya ḥadīṯa, “modern town”), or Hebrew קֶרֶת חֲדָשָׁה (qeret ḥăḏāšāh, “new town”).
